71 Challenger Convertible Resto Help
« on: August 09, 2010 - 10:39:23 AM »
Hi Guys,

I am getting ready to remove the K-member and want to construct something with wheels to put under the front so I can move it around.  I' guessing I would attach it to the bumper bolt holes somehow.  I only need it for the front the real axle is still in and I have regular dollies under them.

What I am looking for is pictures of creative ideas that I can use.  I appreciate it very much.

Dave

Are the doors on the car? The reason I ask is if not, be sure to put a brace from the hinge to the door striker. This will keep the body flex down to a minimum. Attaching the dollie wheels where the bumper brackets attach will work fine. This is where I attached the rotisserie when I did my car. But don't do it with the doors removed without the brace. If the doors are on the car, don't open them.  :2cents:

Certainly good safety measure but I don't really feel it's necessary for a hard top car in good condition. The roof ties everything together for structural support. A vert and really rusty cars is a must do having door support.

I moved my car 180 miles on a trailer just like in the picture. The only thing added was angle iron put on to box the legs together.

Yes, the doors are on the car but will be removed eventually to repair the rust around the hinges.  But I do plan on  replacing the doors with bracing.  I have already welded in sub frame connectors already so that should help.

BTW - The Challenger is a convertible

Hey does anyone have any old crappy hinges that I can use to weld up some bracing?

 Thanks

Here are what the door re inforcements look like. I'm sure with enough creativity you could make your own.

I made a small frame that bolts in place of the k-member.  I wanted the dollywheels as close as possible to the position of the wheels. It does help when adjusting panels.
