    "Exhaust"ing Problem

    Basically, for as long as I have had my Chally (10 yrs and counting) whenever I drive it, I always STINK of exhaust!  Sometimes on long outings, I will have "black snot" (not to be too graphic) so I have to wonder just what I am doing to my health!

    Does anybody else have a problem with exhaust getting into the cabin, and stinkin' up your clothes??  I have checked for leaks, but cannot find any, so I have to wonder how the fumes are getting from behind the rear tires, into the kokpit.

     I have tried various tips, and angles, but to no avail.

    Thoughts?

    Have the 1/4s ever been replaced or patched , often the inner is not properly sealed to the outer , no body plugs missing ?

    it's been tubbed, and the aluminum was sealed very well against the quarters...but this might be something worth investigating further, for sure. 

    Maybe this weekend warrants another crawl underneath.  Thanx for the tip

      That's an excellent idea ;) Another thought is if your headers aren't tight enough against your engine block. Maybe the odor is coming from the engine compartment.

    I would think that if the leak is at the exhaust manifold, you would hear it for sure! (It would be loud ticking)  I don't think that's where your problem is!  Do you have a good seal on your trunk lid??  Sounds to me like its coming in from the rear somewhere!!!  ???

    Without setting your car on fire a good idea might be to stand away from the car light a rolled up
    newspaper on fire for a moment and blow it out so it makes a good amount of smoke
    Have someone sit in the car with the windows up while you go around under the car and wave the
    smokey newspaper in the wheelwells, under the trunk, firewall ect

    In your case with those fiberglass quarters and other modifications I'll bet it's coming from back there
    and should be easily found and fixed with a little foam or extra glass in those seams


    You could try this the old school way with purple haze but that might draw too much attention
    nowadays with 911 and all

    I DO have a fog machine for Halloween...I should have thought of that before!!!!

    I'll have to make time this week, and break it out...see what I can find..

    You couls always pressurize the inside of the car, blower motor on high, shop air etc and ssspray a faoming glass cleaner on any suspect seam, if it bubbles you have an air leak.

    Another thought. Check the gaskets around the tail lights. I'm not sure how they look on a 72, but I had after-market gaskets on my 70 that didn't cut it. They were too thin, and water could get past them. I bought a nice set of originals, and all smells and leaks are gone.

    This is interesting...for YEARS I had a problem with the exhaust.  In fact, for as long as I have had this car (10 years), whenever I would drive it, I would stink of exhaust.  I always drive with all the windows down (cuz it looks better, and it's HOT out) but this past weekend that I had it out, I'm not noticing any stink in the cab.  ???

    Dunno if the problem has somehow corrected itself, or if I just haven't driven it enough for the problem to return.

    Due to heavy rains all week, and into the weekend, it'll be a l'il while before I get it back out, especially with the needed repairs, but I'll keep posts on the situation.

    Yup, Know it well!  I have to shower before going to bed (Mrs. T/A Care's orders) or the bed smells like car in the morning! :P ;D
