73-74 fender mounted turn signal light holes
« on: September 10, 2010 - 03:57:07 PM »
Can someone with a 73 or 74 Challenger, post a pic or two of the holes in the top of the fender for the turn signal lights?  I'm pretty sure I used a 72 fender to measure and drill the holes and 72 fender lights are different.  I think the two holes in the fender top should be close to the same size on a 73 and 72's aren't.

The back hole is where the bulb comes through the fender.  The front hole looks like it needs to be a lot bigger than the one I have drilled.  There is a stepped section on the rubber turn signal housing that looks like it needs to go up into the front hole.

Also, could someone post a picture of thier headlight splash shield installed with the fender mounted turn signal wiring inplace?  There is a rubber coated metal wire holder welded to the fender in that area.  I need to know what wires are held in place by that piece and how the turn signal housing is routed.  Thanks

No, the one I sold you was a 73/74.   The 72's didn't use bumper fillers.  The drivers side fender didn't have any holes in the area where the side filler clips go in.  The one I sold you did.  Those are the only differences in the 72/73/74 fenders.(holes for the fender mount signals and if it has the holes for the fillers)

ok then, the fender you sold me has the holes for the fender mounted lights. Do you want me to measure the hole sizes?

The holes in that fender were measured off of the 72.  Those will most likely not be right.  That's why I need to see an accual 73 or 74 fender.

I have fenders with the signal light holes.  I will try to get what you need tomorrow.  It is 1 AM here.  If I start banging sheet metal around in the shed my neighbors will want to bang me around also.

I have the fenders neatly stacked and tied in a shed.  I squeezed in and took these pics of the drivers side fender.  It is a 73.  To the best of my knowledge with the exception of early 70 fenders the holes are in the same place for the indicators for all years of Challenger. Pic 1: the hole is about 1/2 inch from the fender edge where it meets the hood.  I started at two inches to avoid the chrome tag causing a misread of the measurement.  Pic 2:  Measured from the top of the outside peak of the fender the hole falls real close to 6 1/2 inches.  The measurement on pic 1 is more accurate.  I gave you this one as a guide.  Pic 3: From the top edge where the fiberglass panel meets the fender the measurement is 8 inches to the center of the hole. The 1/2 and the 8 should put you where you need to be. Hope it helps.  If you need more info let me know.

Here are two pics of a 70 fender.  The indicator is a different style and it is mounted in the same location.

Thanks for that pic.  I think I really :swear: up.   :stomp: :stomp: :stomp:

By the looks of your picture, the fender light drops in from the top and the philips screw goes right into the fender to hold it in place.  I thought the rubber housing went underneith and the screw just went into that piece to hold it to the fender.  Right now I've got two larger holes in the top of my fender. :swear:

It never crossed my mind until a couple days ago that the 72 lights are different and might have different holes in the fender. :swear:

It looks like I'm going to have to make a plate for the underside of the fender to hold the lights in.  You won't be able to see it once the splash shield is on.  :stomp: :pullinghair: :stomp: :banghead:

It does go through the top with the rubber part on the top of the fender.  Both styles go through the top.  The earlier one is bolted from the bottom with a nut and the newer style has the screw on top.

Does anyone have a pic of the front of the wheelwell with the splash shield installed?  I need to see how the wires are routed in the wire clip that is welded onto the fender.
