Man...what the hell were you thinking!
« on: September 06, 2010 - 10:21:43 PM »
I keep findign crazy stuff the previous owner did to my car!!!

I purchased the car almost 20 years ago...it is an origional 318 car.  The guy I purchased the car from droped in a 360 / 727 combo out of a 1980 new yorker.

In the last month I figured out that the wrong engine mounts were in the car...fixed that only to have a vibration pop up.   :stomp:Turns out the drive shaft was about 2 inches shorter then it should be (not sure what the drive shaft is out off).

Well thats not too bad...to make the driveshaft fit...probably because the mounts were wrong, the dumb___ ground down the slip yoke by almost an inch. :pullinghair:

I figure I had only a couple of inches of slip yoke in the trans once I put in the correct motor mounts. :22yikes:  You do not want to know how far I drove it like this.

Now I know that I have to take some of the blame...I have had the engine out several times over the years, and probably the driveshaft at least once, but that was a lot of years ago and back then it seemed to be hard to come by the right info!

I wonder what I will find next!!! :banghead:

Here are some pics of the crazy parts...notice the difference in the diameter and length of the driveshafts and slip yoke.  ???

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to rant!!

Wow! that is crazy.  You got lucky that the driveshaft did't fall out.  :screwy:

Yes, what some people do to take short cuts is crazy.

That IS crazy.

Back in the day, I found the bottom of a quarter panel made of chicken wire.  Now I know that wasn't so odd back then; but this one still had the chicken in it! :roflsmiley:

I call him Bubba.  :stomp:

He installed a Cuda drive shaft into my Challenger. Glad I found his work before anything bad happened. He also left out a bunch of cotter pins and the torsion bar clips.  :villagers:

I had the opposite problem when I got my car. The driveshaft was to long. It was shoved so far into the tranny I couldn't get it out? I had to pull the engine to get the u-joint cups outta the rear end! I have no idea how he installed it? :screwy:
Hey Jason there is a post on here called hack job pictures or something like that. Looks like your pictures qualify to me!

This reminds me of the motor mounts in NIKKI. Even when I bought her the motor seemed to lean to one side a little bit. Turned out to be some torched pieces of steel -sorta/kinda/almost made into motor mounts.  :screwy: (which I also think took out the trans mount/ had a wierd vibe from below). when I think of the times I gave her a mouthfull of gas and just smoked 'em.  :22yikes:  schumakers now, all good!
70 Chally R/T Convertible- Yes she's really got a HEMI, no she's not a Charger!

Actually, that driveshaft modification is recommended by Direct Conenction for competition driveshafts. The idea is to engage more of the splines on the output shaft, but it must also go hand in hand with a longer driveshaft to properly position the slip yoke.

Similarly, reusing 318 motor mounts is not uncommon either. The did sit on teh block differently than 360 mounts and require a spacer to line up correctly, but they can work.

Wonder if I should share with anyone how to make a 4bbl throttle bracket out of a couple of 2bbl brackets.

another thing....isn't the small end ( necked down end ) of the driveshaft supposed to go towards the rear end ? NOT the tranny yoke?
