OEM Rear Sway Bar OK with Hellwig 1 1/8" Front Bar?
« on: September 25, 2010 - 10:32:09 AM »
I just picked up a 1 1/8" Hellwig front sway for a good price and am wondering what the common wisdom is about which rear bars match up well size-wise.  I've already have an original OEM back bar I'd like to use.  I think its 3/4" and mounts to the frame.  Will this combo work well with eachother?  I've got stock T bars but I think the rear leaf springs were possibly swapped out for heavier units by the original owner because she towed a boat with the Barracuda.  The only other changes I was planning to make at the same time was Edelbrock shocks.

Thanks in advance, Jim

Yes, those are within a range that will work well together. Depending on how hard you push the car, the rear may feel a bit looser than before, but this is normal.

My 73 didn't come with any swaybars so unless I screw it up badly its definitely going to be better than before.  Thanks for the input.  I've got a stock front sway bar that I could use, but its only the smaller .88 (or there abouts) bar and everyone seems to think this is too small to make much of a difference.

Just to try and learn a bit about sway bars, I had my car out a couple weeks ago with no rear bar, (1 1/8' front bar, MP Improved B/RB torsion bars and XHD leafs). I couldn't tell a whole lot that the rear bar was missing. Bit of a difference but not much. So I think you will be fine RR.

That's some interesting news, and thanks that does make it sound like I'll be fine with 'only' a 3/4" rear.  I was wondering what other things like bigger rubber on the back, possibly heavier springs on back than stock (not 100% sure on that one) will help equalize any difference between 3/4" & 7/8" sway bars on the back.   I was even thinking I could tinker with air pressures (heck NASCAR does it all the time) going up or down a pound or two in the rears to even things out.  I just opened the box on my Hellwig front bar, that thing looks big compared to stock!
