727 - reverse manual valve body or regular valve body
« on: September 19, 2010 - 12:46:54 AM »
I have a guy near me with a 727 torqueflite tranny with reverse manual valve body and an 3500 stall- I currently dont have a tranny - his is brand new with receipts on the build. He wants 750. is that a good deal or should I get a 727 core and have it rebuilt. I dont know much about hi performance auto's as I have always had manuals.
should I go for this tranny or do I want to have one rebuilt. What would you guys do? I have a column shift original 318 car with a 400 storker going in. I'm keeping the column with the linkage to make it look stock
thanks

I could not imagine working a reverse manual with a column shifter....otherwise sounds like a good deal.....maybe you could find a stock valve body to put in, easy bolt up.

What does the receipt say was done to it?

So with the manual reverse valving you cnat just put it in "D" and burn rubber? you need to go thru each gear like a manual? - I could probably do that with a column shift? I dont want to pull hte steering column thats why I left the column shifter in

Yes & no....Shift pattern is Reversed, when you put it in D your actually in 1st....then YOU manually shift to 2 for 2nd then 1 for 3rd (Idea seems to work well for race only cars with floor shifter)...then have to shift back down when starting over, no longer automatic...Manual
It's one thing to putter to the start line & blast down the 1/4 mile with this but I think quite another to drive around town with it.

Thank you. that solves that. I'll keep looking for a regular old big block 727.

I put a good 5 hours into it tonight - pulled the small block 727 - pulled the radiator, driverline (found its got the 9 on the rear axle so its a 489, but no posi) Pulled the old heater hoses, wiper motor, moved the wiring in prep for painting the engine compartment  -

Main thing to remember when driving a manual valve body around town is to make sure it's under load when upshifting. It'll crash into gear violently if you don't.
Generally this means you accelerate as you change up.
A bit of a pain in stop/start traffic but you do get a feel for it.

One of the things I've considered for the Roadrunner is a reverse valve body so I could shift it with a stock column shift, but definitely wasn't planning on a full manual only the reverse pattern.  I've shifted from second past drive into neutral years ago, not good.  So I can get one (reverse pattern) without the other (full manual) can't I?

Thanks, Jim

AFAIK you only get reverse pattern in full manual

I have a reverse manual valve body but it's on a console shifter and I love it. As already said, I couldn't begin to imagine trying to manually shift with a column shifter. As far as the price, that's not a bad price if it's fresh and includes the torque converter. My torque converter was about a grand just by itself.
