Noob tranny cooler question - what connectors?
« on: August 28, 2010 - 04:06:40 AM »
I'm replacing my aftermarket radiator that doesn't fit the car with one that does.  The new one has a tranny oil cooler with threaded connector (bung?).
My oil lines don't have the fitting needed to connect to the cooler bung.   It's dang hard to search the internet when you don't know what the fittings are called...

The existing oil lines go to a separate oil cooler which just uses circle (?) clamps and rubber hose to connect to the steel line.  I want to remove that cooler to clean up the car.

The shop manual shows the fittings and they look like something I can get at a plumbing store (maybe Autozone?)...  the radiator is a champion EC374.

Please enlighten this lowly noob.

You will need to use flare fittings going from the tubing to the radiator available at your local auto parts or hardware store. If your transmission line ends have been cut off for hoses to attach you will need to flare the end with a flaring tool(don`t forget to put the fitting on FIRST!) if they are still long enough to work.Your other options are buying a roll of tubing and making new lines or buying them pre-made from a resto parts co.

Ended up at Pep Boys and they had what I needed...

I installed the Champion 26" rad and hooked it all up.  First test was great.

I still have to install a longer overflow hose and put in the clutch fan...

Hopefully soon my overheating problems will go away.

There are some nice chromed universal shrouds... may go that route.
Cheap and available...   :drunk:

okay, the fan is in... finally.  Those bolts were a royal pain!  But patience is a virtue (or so I'm told).   :hyper:

I've got an offset from the radiator to the clutch of 1.5 inches from the top to 1.25 inches to the bottom...

Everything is snug and ready to be fired up tomorrow.  Then it's time to look for that shroud and then some coooool sailing!   :aarg:

Thanks Bill...  The Fan clutch is a Hayden from Pep-Boys and the fan is from Auto-Zone...  I also have a Napa and an O'Reily's (was Kragen) here in Simi Vally...

The shroud will come from Amazon... it's much cheaper there than from anyone else...  (Trans-Dapt 9454 Fan Shroud 5.5" Wide )

I gave it a short test this evening and had good air flow though the radiator already...  a good start.

Hope you're getting time to work on your car.  Want to see it on the road!

I finally put the finishing touches on the cooling system.  The new balanced thermostat (the copper one) was installed and the shroud went on.  Took the ‘Cuda out on a 40 minute shake down on a hot day and everything went great… at least until I was heading home and noticed some whisps of steam coming out of the front.  Looked like I have some water(?) coming out (collecting on) the top of the valve cover breather?  Seems odd… it evaporated quickly and I’ll have to run it again to confirm.

Hope these pics are not too large for everyone...
