I've got a 440 I'm lookn' to sell. It's disbl, and needs to be rebuilt. $500,  live in Kansas city. I also have a 727 ans 83/4 4:10 posi rear.

ALL PARTS MUST BE PICK UP BY YOU. WILL NOT SHIP. Sorry, but its alot easyer.

$350.Little suface rust, it would need paint,new brake lines,drums... Never had a problum with the gears.Still has springs on it.

8 3/4:  which housing?  Suregrip?  Clutch or cone?

All I know about the 8:3/4 is that, it has a 4:10 posi and came out of a 73 cuda. I'll sell it for $375.

If it was original to that car, it would have been a 489 housing with the cone-type suregrip.  But people change them often enough that you never know unless you check.  742 and 489 are considered the better housings.  741's are frequently avoided as they have significantly smaller pinion bearing diameters. Also aftermarket gears hard difficult to find for them.  Clutch-type suregrips are considered better thatn cone-types because thay are rebuildable.  Cone-type suregrips are marginally rebuildable, but not recommended.  The suregrip units will interchange between housings. On clutch-type units, springs will be visible thru windows in the suregrip unit.

On clutch-type units, springs will be visible thru windows in the suregrip unit.

I believe it's the cone type sure grips that have the springs, not the clutch type.
