Gas Tank
« on: November 07, 2010 - 11:36:53 AM »
I recently dicussed gas tanks with my mechanic. he said he did some research and they changed in March of 72 and that the one I need costs 240.00. Any one ran into this? He seems to think the baffels or something changed and that a different tank will make my gauge read improperly.

Not much if any difference in price on all of them, I think there is only one source....
Differences I  know of are vents for the emission systems, although I have heard of a sump or something in '70 models that is not reproduced.

Lower prices but watch out for shipping....to my state only $25.00

Spectra has them for 135.00. Goodmark has them for 219.00. At vans they hae 2 different part numbers one is for early 72 the other for late 72. The price is still much cheaper {at 150.00} than 240.00.

check your local autozoe if you have one in your area.  they may cost a little more but you can order it and pick it up yourself at the store, plus they have a 3 year warranty.  just my 2¢

Early 72 cars still used the 71 style vapor tube that's visable in the trunk.  If your car has the smaller vapor tank mounted under the car on the shock X-member, you need the newer tank.

:dunno:  My '72 SBD was 8/17/71 and I have only the 4 vents at the front of the tank.  I don't have one in the trunk that I'm aware of.  :dunno:  I think I remember seeing that tube.  I thought it was on 1970 models, might be wrong.

Like Bullit mentioned, there may only be one source, I think it is Spectre Industries, I think in Canada.  I replaced my tank a few years ago, got it from Rock Auto.  With the 10% discount it was something in the neighborhood of $155 then add shipping.

There is a difference if you go to the Rock Auto site and March '72 is the dividing line, not sure what the difference might be though.  Cost is about $163 plus shipping.  http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php

I googled a pic of a 72 with the 71 style tube in the trunk.  I don't know when they changed over to the 73-74 style.

Wow, that's not the tube I was thinking of in the '70 models, unless it's different than the one in that link.  I thought it was a small tube?  The one in the pic looks almost as big as the filler tube.  I don't have anything like that iin my car.  :clueless:

Here's the pic from the link.

71's used that style of vapor separator.  The first time I saw a 72 with that was in 08 or 09 at the Mopar Nats.  I had no idea they came that way.  I think I've only seen 4 or 5 setup like that.  I didn't look to see what engine was in those cars.  Maybe the early 318 cars came that way.  The 318's got more emissions equipment than the 340's did it seems.

Mine does not have that tube. It has the 4 lines that go to the vent. Then it has 1 line that runs up to the vapor can under the hood.

Then you should have the 73-74 style tank.  I got mine from RockAuto.com.  THey were the cheapest I found at the time and it was shipped extremely fast.  You want a Spectra tank made in Canada.  It comes galvanized like stock.  I've seen some others come painted. :nono:
