Front Torque Boxes
« on: December 14, 2010 - 02:26:49 PM »
I bought a set of front and rear torque boxes a long time ago. I think it was from Harms but they don't even have them on their site any more. The rears went in with out much issue at all. But the fronts don't seem to fit at all. The angle from the floor to the rocker panel isn't even close. If I recut the surface that hits the rocker so the angle is correct then it is too short to reach from rocker to frame rail. So in order to make them fit I have to change the flange that hits the rocker and they cut the torque box in half and add about 3/8" strip in to make them long enough to hit the frame rails.

Is this common of these things. Is their someone that makes one that actually fits?

I had similar experiences with the torque boxes from Auto Rust Tech.  Rears went on great but the fronts required some "massaging" to fit.  However, I just needed to form them to fit the contours and didn't need to cut and re-weld.

I am not sure of the source but mine were the gold anodized or coating that were the factory looking ones.
The rears were easy the fronts needed some fitting but not a big deal, I got mine to fit with a real nice tight look.
The forward flange that goes to the cars frame rail had to be re bent about a 1/4 inch inboard so it fit or it was too big to slide up. I also remember having to trim a bit at the front edge the welds to the rocker panel side.
But after some massaging it looks better then Factory.

I had to modify mine too. Pi$$ed me off at the time but went to work on them to make them fit. A few hours later, they fit in good.

Perhaps (but this is just a guess) that body fit was a variable tolorance on the rockers that causes the torque boxes to not fit on some, but might not on others. I would sure like to find out if others besides you and I have run into this problem also.

That first picture is about exactly what I have do to mine. Guess I will just get to work making them fit rather then take a shot at another pair that doesn't fit.

front always have a fitment issue. i think it is because of the tolerences or dimensions of the frame rail and inner rocker with concideration of the floor, i put 3 sets of these in on cudas and all 3 had to be tweeked.
