70 Dash questions
« on: November 03, 2010 - 07:35:45 PM »
Wiring in the car is a disaster, so I got new wiring. Need to remove the dash, so can anybody give me a how-to crash course?
I ordered the manual, but it is not here and I really need to get this done.

TIA

this will help
http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/ServiceHighlights/1970PassengerCarHighlights10.shtml

if your leaving the dash frame in place, then there are 5 speed nuts towards the rear back of the dash and 3 more just behind were the gauges are(drop the steering column for easier access ), and 3 more just behind the glove box area and ash tray,,11 total and then the 4 bolts at the vents that need removed,,also on each end of the dash mine had a screw, you can see them when the doors are open,,and of course you have remove the outer trim

I would just drop the column & remove the guages , you can easily get to the wiring that way

What do you have to do to drop the column?

I believes it involves 2 bolts where the column meets the dash frame.  Loosen them and the steering column will drop down and give you the clearance you'll need to work.  I would pull the steering wheel off as well as it is only a couple nuts.    :2thumbs:

Do you have to mess with anything where the column goes into the firewall?

Where it goes into the firewall, I pull the 3 mounting bolts all the way out.  If I were you, I would pull the whole column out.   Just drive the coupler pin out, then pull it at the splines.  It is so much easier to tilt the dash down if your column is out.

:iagree:  Pulled my column before I took the dash out, not hard and made job much easier.
