« on: November 28, 2004 - 11:34:45 AM »
Has any one on here cut out and replaced one of these?
I would really like to see some pics etc, where you cut, what it ended up
looking like, etc.
Thanks,
Dan

Dilligaf, just what exactly are your plans?  Does the car need it repaired from an accident or something or are you planning on making it a convertible? :dontknow:
1973 Dodge Challenger......................The ongoing project. (00/----\00)
1991 Dodge Stealth R/T Twin-Turbo....The sunny day cruiser (RTBoost)
1990 Toyota Celica GT Liftback...........The new daily & winter driver.
All-American Muscle: 'Cudas and Challengers...Still the Elite and always will be.

Maybe I am wording this wrong.
It is the piece of sheet metal that both door hinges bolt to on the side of the car.
It is rotted out from the the bottom rocker, to the top, just below the start of the drivers windshield post.
No accident just good old canadian rust!

Here are some pics of what I plan to repair:

That is awesome.
Thank You,
You do not happen to have one of just before adding the new metal?
IE, what it looked like with the rust cut out?
And, what gauge . type of metal is that?
And, diid you just lay it on top, and then seam seal, or is it but weld?

Sorry i do not have a pic before the 1st pc. of metal went on.
The 1st piece of metal is cold rolled steel and the gauge is 0.050" for the rocker pannel ext.( I work in a metal stamping plant, steel very easy to find)
I took a flat piece of steel and hand formed it to match the door sill ( alot of hammering  :'() and then butt welding it on the left hand side,  aslo the top flange where the rubber seal goes i had to plug weld it.

Then took 0.030" coated steel and form the curves around the door hinges, had to use small pieces to form the rad's and weld them toether.
Grind then weld, Grind then weld, Grind then weld, Grind then weld.

I aslo had to do the B-post

Some day when i'm done all the metal work I will seam seal the hole car inside and out.

Good luck

Nice work there gichy, you made it look simple. I'm hoping that when I get the fenders off of mine it won't be too bad. The rockers look good, so I think the area behind the fenders at the very bottom won't look like yours did. I have no idea when I'll get to it, but there's always the chance I'll at least look over the winter.

Thanks for posting the photos.

Great work Gichy. When it comes to resto, fabrication can be the most hard, but the most fun. This is the type of stuff I dig the most.

Man, I wish I could do that.  Redline showed me how to use the welder and set me loose with a couple of peices of metal to practice on.  You know, it's REALLY easy to burn a whole right through that stuff??   :newsad:

Yea but you get used to the welding. To me, bending the metal to look like a fender dog leg or
a floor part and making look like Mopar did is the hard part
