70 Challenger SE stripe options
« on: December 16, 2010 - 08:48:30 PM »
I would appreciate some help. I have a '70 Challenger SE that I am restoring. The car has been repainted red at some point. The original color was Burnt Orange, which I am taking it back to. A friend has decoded part of the fender tag for me, and discovered that the car originally came with a stripe of some kind. He doesn't know where or what kind of stripe it had. My question is what kind of stripes would have been available on the SE? FYI, it is just an SE, not an R/T SE. Thanks to anyone who can help!

What are the V codes on the fender tag?

I'll have to find out. Does a stripe option start with the letter "V"?

there are basically 2 stripes , the long side stripe & the Bumblee bee across the rear .
the V code will tell which one & the color

I am surprised with it being an SE only that you do not have body side moldings   ???

Would body side moldings be identified under the "V" code? It's possible the car could have had them originally. When I got the car it didn't have any. It had been repainted at some point, so they could have been removed. If I can post the "V" code on here, would anyone be able to translate it for me? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The body side moulding (if '70 and '72 is the same.) would be indicated by a V5* code, the * denoting the color.  Most popular I would imagine being the black, so that would translate into a V5X code on the fender tag/build sheet.

If I am not mistaken, body side moulding had studs that went through the body metal, yes?  That would mean that there would be holes on the back side of the ORIGINAL body sheet metal even if there was the removal of the body side moulding, as many owners did as some didn't like the look of it or else it interfered with the look of adding stripes later in the cars life.  If I am correct, if you had body side moulding, you couldn't get a stripe package.  My '72 Rallye had scoop/strobe stripe deleted I think because it had the factory body side moulding.

If you have the SE option, would V5* show up on the fender tag or would it be "assumed" you get it with that option package?  I could imagine it showing up on the build sheet though...  :dunno:
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

Hey, guys, I looked at my car today, and the guy who is doing the body work on it uncovered holes where body side molding had been! I would presume that to be the only "striping" on it. I took some photos of the fender tag, but they are kind of difficult to make out some of the codes. I'll try to find out more. Again, I really appreciate all of the feedback. It is very helpful!

If you can email a photo of the tag I can look it over if you like?

Just to clear up the V5_ moldings, they were optional, not standard on the SE (or other models)

I just tried to send a photo of my fender tag to your email. I hope it went through.
