I need help! please! stripped threads.
« on: December 04, 2010 - 11:18:17 PM »
 :1zhelp:
I just stripped out the threads in the last hole in the rear of the head on my 383.  It's for the intake manifold mounting bolt(also holds the kick down linkage bracket).  I just had the engine rebuilt and am in the process of putting it back together.  I don't have the valve covers installed yet and I can see and feel the hole from the underside  of the head.  I thought about helicoiling it but I'm very concerned about metal filings.  Can you use a helicoil in a bolt hole that has no bottom?
I even thought about using a "top lock" nut on the end of a longer bolt, but it looks like the nut would be too
close to the nearest push rod.

Please give me your input or experience on this matter.

Thanks
mike

Sure you can helicoil a open ended hole. Just make sure the tang is fully engaged in the threads before you break it off.  As for the metal filings. You can try grease. You may have to tap a little bit, back out and clean the metal shavings off and repeat a few times, but it works.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Spend $0.85 on a roll of paper towels and cover everything twice. Use grease as recommended and keep a shop vac handy as you tap for the Heli-Coil.

In addition a small magnet on a stick to get filings and the helicoil tang after it's broken off.
Something like this. I have a small one about 1/4" diameter for getting down the hole.
