Jacked Up Center Consul Box Door along the hinge
« on: October 22, 2010 - 08:32:12 PM »
Most of the enter Consul Doors I have seen don't fit right anymore, including mine.  I expect it is because the screws are not set correctly and/or the plastic is warped and does not fit well.  I tried making a repair to the screwed parts along with gluing the parts together (a no-no for a high end restoration), but my center consol box door is still jacked up along the hinge.  Any suggestions?

Mine has never fit well & always rattled. I started by removing & straightening the hinge & then making tweaks to get the door straight. It came out fitting much better but still not perfect so I cut & attached thin strips of closed cell foam at the corners which at least keeps it quiet.

I think it is the spring load on the hinge that is the problem. There is so much power in the spring that it warps the door and brakes the tabs where the screws go. I tried to repair the door but ended up buying a new. I had the hinge apart and sent it for replating. When I put the hinge together I didn't spring load it.
Now I have to hold the door when I open it, but when it is closed it looks OK.
I have read about similar problems with AAR hoods. Fiberglass hood and too much power in the springs. Some guys have reinforced the fiberglass with steel bars.
Maybe you can build an inner structure in the console door from metal that can take the power from the spring?  :thinkerg:

Got the same problem with mine but haven't had a look to see if I can resolve it.

By the previous replies it doesn't sound like I will but if I figure out something that works I'll post it up.

I just noted you have both a TA like stripe and a rear bumble bee stripe and all I can say is:  NICE as the two really work well together.

Mine didn't fit too good either, and it's always been that way.  This is before I adjusted it.

adjusting these 6 screws will help

Sorry I don't have any new pictures of the better fit, but it was a lot better than before.  Good luck.

Right, but the problem is what the 6 screws go into is some 40 year old plastic "towers" and most of mine have broken away from their base and the whole assembly has warped a little as well.
