Will a 1978 A833 4 speed out of a 78 power ram 4x4 truck work in my 73 chally, or is the tailshaft different?  basically could I remove the 4 speed, take off the bellhousing and use it in my small block chally conversion?  I have a 318 904 8 3/4 in the car right now and I am staying with the 318 and 8 3/4

yes it fits , you need to mill the front brg reatianer down to 4.80 or get the small block bell from the truck & you need to drill & tap the rear shifter mount pad aslo

I have a small block bellhousing. so all I need to do is drill and tap the rear shifter mount pad? is it hard to find the crossmember?

The E body uses the same crossmember auto or 4 spd so as long as you have the crossmember you are ok

The A833OD I am using came from an 80 D100 pickup and the rear shifter mount was drilled and tapped. I have seen several others in vans and pickups where they were drilled and tapped. I had heard that they weren't but at least some were.

BTW, my Barracuda is a 68. If anyone is interested in how to make the long tailshaft tranny work in an A-body car let me know. It really wasn't hard to do.

I have never seen a Dodge 4x4 truck with an 833 od tranny , all  the 4x4s I have seen use the A435

A ton of short shaft A833's?? I have never seen one in a bone yard (they are always gone) and anyone selling them want's a premium. The one I used in my Barraucda cost me $75 from the local bone yard and that included the flywheel, clutch, bellhousing, shifter and rods.

Anyway, back to your question. If the short shaft shifter mount does not interfer with the cross member then I see no reason that you couldn't do what I did. Fabricate a plate that moves the sifter back to the e-body location. You will also need to get a new drive shaft. In my case I had to shorten mine which was easy. You will need to retube yours because it will need to be longer (or find something from another car that can be cut down).

using a short tail shaft 833 in a E body can be done but not easily  better trade or sell & get the long shaft version
