Vehicle wheel Dollies
« on: November 28, 2010 - 09:12:34 PM »
Not sure if this is the correct board for this post. But here goes, I have a 1970 Challenger that I hope to start work on soon. I am interested in getting some type of wheel dollies to move the car around in my garage when work begins. I am looking for recommendations on what type of dollies to get. Any input would be appreciated.

The GoJack dollies allow you to raise the wheels without a jack and are easy to roll around. I bought some cheap ones from Harbor Freight and it's a good thing I only need them to cushion the tires for long term storage (the bottoms are curved) because they don't roll for beans. The GoJacks cost more but are worth it in my view

In the interests of full disclosure I should mention that I'm putting a 4200 pound car on a set of Harbor Freight dollies rated at 4000 pounds. Could be why they don't roll so well?  :misbehaving:

Are you wanting the dollies that you set your tires in....or ones you can bolt to the body to move the car around when the front/rear suspensions are removed?

Your nearest Harbor Freight should have them. My rotisserie had a few rot out and I bought replacements there.

Make your own.  THat's what I did.  I just bought some steel plate and some square tubing.  I bought some small casters at Harbor Frieght but they didn't work very well.  Now I have 6" casters that I bought at Menards.

Very easy and inexpensive.  The front stands mount to the front bumper mounts and the rears bolt to the front leaf spring mount.

I bought my Tire Skates from this company:

More expensive than the Harbor Freight wheel dollies, but very high quality.  I had no problem moving my car around the garage and driveway.   :2thumbs:

Just make them out of square tubing, I will try to post a pic later tonight of some we use in the shop. I made them in about 2-3 hrs counting cutting the steel. I've got about $90 in the whole set of six including the flea market casters I bought...They also have adjustable height to make up for uneven floors. I threaded some blocks and welded them to the side of the tubing then used all thread to make adjustments on height. This allows you to get the body 100% level and keep it that way after you cut off the metal. You would be surprised how bad out of tolerance these bodies were from the factory and how much they "relax" after you cut off stuff... This one was 1/4 out of level on the pass side. If needed you can remove the casters and make metal pads to replace the casters to make it even more rigid or bolt it to a trailer.
