AAR's and T/A's are a little different in the spring area.  All other cars came with bare unpainted leaf springs.  Some AAR's and T/A's came with bare unpainted springs but some came with black painted springs.  If you have the original springs, take them apart and see if you can find some traces of black paint.

The rear ends should be a semi gloss black.  The factory used a very cheap paint.  It may have been gloss black paint but since it was so cheap, it didn't have the high gloss that we are used to seeing today.  There are flatteners you can add to gloss black paint.  If you are going to spray out of a gun, that's what I'd do.  Use gloss black paint and flatten it a little...maybe 10-20%.  If you are going to use spray cans, use semigloss.

Check out the large picture at the bottom of the page.  It's of Dave Waldens OE Gold 1970 Valiant.  Note the color of the rear end, trans x-member and the K-member.

I'm going to post a few more links for you to look at if you want.  The first one is the build of a pink T/A done by Mike at BE&A.  His car had bare unpainted springs.  There is a pic of black painted springs in that link.

This one has to do with correct AAR and T/A engine comp detailing.

Finally, this one has to do with using paint to duplicate some factory finishes...

Interesting. From this pic, it looks like the rear end housing is semi-gloss back, but the third member looks to be natural steel. Is this correct?

Also, the gold T/A you linked to... wow. Beautiful.

Yes, the center section of the 8 3/4 rear axle is bare.  Lower shock plates and driveshaft are also bare.  Dave Waldens company (ECS) developed their RPM sealer for bare metal for use on that car.  I just picked up a can of it.  I sealed a few fasteners with it over the weekend.

Good to know.

Is this a rattle can spray? I'm getting into my steering column soon and the lower part of it looks to be bare metal. Might be good to blast it and then seal it with the stuff you're using. What's the sheen on it like? Does it really look like untreated metal after it dries?

i think this was the first time the rims have been removed from the car since 1979.

Cars with Rallye wheels had red (kind of an orangish-red) drums.

Cars that came with styled wheels....basically Rallye and Magnum 500 style wheels, had the drums brushed with an orangish red paint.  You couldn't see the drums on cars that had wheel covers so the paint wasn't applied to them.

The RPM comes in a small tub and is a paste.  The parts you want to seal are heated to 120 degrees, then the RPM is brushed or rubbed on.  It melts into a liquid and turns glossy so you can see the areas that have been treated.  Once it dries it's invisable.  I'll post a link to the Valiant thread.  There are some closeup pictures of the bare metal componants.  They have been treated for over a year and still look like new.

As far as the steering colomn goes...things may have changed by 73 but the earlier years were all painted black.  The paint was cheap and it didn't last long.  The power steering boxes should also be black and not bare metal.  I would have sworn that mine was bare metal.  I've since seen pictures of survivor cars and they all have traces of black paint on the steering boxes.  Mine will be painted an almost flat black...flatter then the K-member.

Also, after blasting parts that you want to leave bare metal, rub them with 0000 steel wool afterwards.  It takes away the blasted look and leaves you with a new appearance.

Here are a couple pictures showing the orange paint on the drums.  These two are from Dave Waldens OE Gold Challenger.

They came two ways, bare metal and black.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Here's a link on the correct finish of the lower sterring column.

Interesting. A manual column looks to be natural steel, with the coupler and six or so inches of the shaft sprayed black. Should be fun trying to duplicate. :-)

Thanks as always!
