What Paint to use for the Argent on the grille and the rallye wheel centers?

I know I am going to have to paint my grille and some wheel centers for Rallye wheels.  What paint can be used to look original on both.  I have a 1970 Barracuda.  Also please let me know where I can get it at if you will.  Thanks I dont know if this has been put out before but I am going to need to know when it comes time.  Gordon

Hey Gordon, I got mine @ Totally Auto. Id buy a max of 2 cans, its pricey but good to have a little extra. Im sure they make the 70 colors too.

The argent silver paint is easy to apply. You will never be able to tell it's from a rattle can.

MIXING LIGHT ARGENT TEXTURED FINISH
MUSCLECAR REVIEW, JUNE 1991
 

Chrysler used two shades of this highly textured Argent paint-light and medium-and they were the only manufacturer that used them at all. The Light Textured Argent, part number DX 8555, is obsolete. The Medium Textured Argent, part number DNA 8933, can sometimes be found at larger, older Ditzler dealers. Last used in the mid 1970's, it is now all but obsolete. Older Ditzler dealers that have remaining stock can mix this paint for you, but it can also be mixed from currently available paints. Here's how.

LIGHT ARGENT TEXTURED

Ingredients for 1 pint (double for quart)
1/2 ounce DX 204- Radiance Silver
1/2 ounce DDL 8568- Non Smudge Aluminum/aluminum base
3 1/2 ounces DCA 468 High Performance Clear

Add 4 ounces of top grade lacquer thinner with drying time according to temperature. Mix thoroughly and pour in 1 pint touch up gun. Use 10 clean 1/4" ball bearings in paint cup to keep the paint mixed. Use three light coats over an existing finish or four to six coats over unfinished parts. This paint runs VERY easily, allow 5-10 minutes between coats.

MEDIUM ARGENT TEXTURED

The steps are exactly as above, but add black lacquer to darken. Start with six drops per pint and stir thoroughly, then spray a sample to compare to the original finish. Add a drop at a time until you achieve the correct tint.

Spray these paints at 55-60 lbs. keeping the gun 18-30 inches from the surface. Frequently agitate the mixture to maintain uniform consistency because the Radiance Silver is heavy and will settle out quickly.

I used medium textured argent out of a can from year one.I used sem trim black for the black center.It turned out really nice.

Is the lower valance on the 72' Cuda with the turn signals also supposed to be argent or just the grey plastic?

where do you get the ingredients?
i couldn't find any of the components:
DX 204- Radiance Silver
DDL 8568- Non Smudge Aluminum/aluminum base
DCA 468 High Performance Clear

Anybody found a good formula for "Dark Argent Textured Silver" with currently available paints from PPG or DuPont?

I found a formula online and gave it to my painter a couple years ago.  He said that a lot of those components are no longer made due to EPA regulations. 

I don't know of anyone selling the correct argent.  BE&A spent a lot of time and money coming up with their own argent formula.  They have origonal Chrysler color samples that they went off of.  The problem is that they don't sell it.  They only use it for the parts that they manufacter.

If you can't find any NOS paint, your going to have to use the spray can stuff until someone comes up with a new formula.  Krylon makes a line of Fusion paints that are supposed to come very close to replicating the factory color and texture.  Some say they are even closer than the Totally Auto Paints.
