5.7 Hemi, 70 SE Challenger, standard transmission?
« on: December 24, 2010 - 07:02:59 PM »
I am planning to put a 5.7 Hemi in my SE.  It was converted (properly) to a 4 speed years ago.  It needs the drivers floor replaced.  Now would be the time to go back to automatic if it is needed for the 5.7 Hemi.  Does anyone know if a 5.7 pattern standard trans is available and will work in a 70 Challenger?  I do not want to modify the 5.7.  The goal is to get the mileage of a 340 with more power and drivability.  I plan to drive this car to shows that are at least 200 miles away from my home. In the past the 4 speed has added some performance and some gas mileage.  If the auto with the 5.7 will give me the same performance as the standard shift 5.7, I will stick with the auto trans.  I need 4 speed parts for my Cuda anyway.    Thanks,
Tod

I am familiar with that modification behind a 340 motor.  Is there a good 5 or 6 speed manual transmission for the 5.7?  Can it be used easily in a Challenger?

Yes maybe no  :clueless:  :faint:
you can put a tremec tko 5 speed in with a few mods and passion has a new one thats based off of the mopar 4 speed case size but its expensive. you can go 6 speed if you don,t mind cutting your cross member out and rebuilding it to make room for the larger case.

your 4 speed will bolt up with a new hemi flywheel BTW  :working:

I did the 6 speed in my challenger if you have more questions, good luck enjoy your 5.7.

Is the perfomance nearly identical with the 6 speed and the automatic?  I know the factory automatic is more readily available which will make it a cheaper conversion.  I am new to this.  Are people using the same automatic that is found in the 300?

The 5.7 has the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the LA engines. Once you get the proper flywheel or flexplate virtually any trans that bolts to a Mopar smallblock will bolt to the new hemi.

the best fit is probably the 727 with the GV overdrive

I have heard the GV unit is unreliable.  Is this true?

I did not know this.  It makes things clearer.  So, I could even keep my 833 with the 5.7?  I would like overdrive.  Is there a good 5 or 6 speed that will work with the 5.7 and my Challenger 4 speed tunnel, etc?  Thanks for all the information.

Yes you could keep your 833, Mopar Performance has a 130 tooth flywheel for the 5.7 and everything else should bolt up. I have a small block 727 behind mine, and if I can get my hands on a reasonably priced 518 down the road I will probably swap it out.

I can confirm that this is NOT true. Mine has worked flawlessly for two years now.

Thats good to know. I am going to put the car back to an automatic and would like to use the gear venders so I don't have to cut up anything in the car.  Can you tell me more about the gear venders unit?  Thanks,
Tod
