have a chance to buy a 72 440, 39k miles out of a motorhome, guy wants $200 bucks for it, should i go for it? is it any good performance wise?

i have a good 70 shortblock, would the heads at least be any good for that motor?

Don't know about performance level coming from a motorhome, but for 200 clams you can hardly go wrong.
 Does it have all the pulleys and brackets?

I had a 318 from a motor home, it was a 72.
That motor was balance and blue printed factory.
At chrysler marine.
It was an absolute beast of a 318.
Very good motor.

Buy it!  Just the bolt on stuff is worth that much.  Not much performance in a motor home 440 but that can be fixed.  All the 440 blocks start out the same so it's what you put inside that counts.  PK

This link will show you a breakdown of the mopar engines from that era.. Motorhome 440's had the low compression engines. Heads and cranks are different compared to the earlier "performance" 440's..

For $200.00 as stated, it is a good deal...However, Gotta make SURe it's a steel crank engine that has been bored for a Straight drive (Pilot)..My Brother got stuck with one that was a 1973 Motorhome 440 with a steel crank that wasn't drilled for a pilot...Prolly gonna have those 'ol heavy a$$ SIX PACK rods in it as well..

If you are buying the engine just fro the heads, I wuold pass on it.. The motorhome's had the larger Combustion Chanber Vol.., lowering the CR..  You are better of just searching for a nice set of heads..

Yeah, I think all motohome engines were the same specs regardless of the size of the motorhome........ If you really wanted to find out, you would have to get the serial numbers...  On the heads you would have to take the valve cover off to view it..

I think you'd be alright with that engine's heads, as long as they don't have resessed valves or anything like thta and with the mileage, I don't see it...A set of runnable heads are woth more than a set of "915"/"516" heads that need a helluva alotta work...

I see you have a delima?  You need a good set of heads, here is a killer deal on a set of closed chamber 915 heads.  Id say they need gone through and new larger valves to be great heads but this is a smoking deal.  No they are not mine...  just found them surffing.

Also, if I were you I would buy that 440 and part it out.  You can get 200.00 for the block alone.  If its a steel crank engine you can get 150-250 for the crank.  Heads are most likely junk on that engine.  Carb you could sell for 50-100 dollars.

You could prob pay for those 915 heads to get redone with the moeny you make off of parting out that 440.  Good luck bro.
