flip top gas cap disassembly

Getting some stuff ready for rechroming and was stumped on this.

It looks like the chrome items are held to the bracket with roll pins but they are one way. No exit hole to push them on thru so how do I get them out? I tried putting a screw in them to yank on but no luck. I tried drilling but they seem extremely hard.

Anyone know the trick?

Roll pin removal!  This is how I did mine.  For the larger pin, the hinge pin, I used a #4x40 tap and tapped it into the roll pin.  I then added a good amount of penetrant and let it soak for awhile.  I then placed the tap in a vise and used a wood "drift" to tap the Flip top away from the roll pin.  I did the latch release button the same way except it is much smaller and I had to go to a # 2x64 thread tap.  The thread count is unimportant but the tap diameter must fit inside the roll pin. I tapped the threads before applying penetrant to help keep the roll pin from turning as I inserted the tap. I think it is about as economical to buy a new flip top as it is to rechrome the old one. I have more pictures but these should show how I did it.  PK

Perfect. Thanks. The way you described it made sense but the added photos were a nice touch!

I tried putting a small screw into them but they were simply too hard to self tap. I tried drilling briefly but I could immediately tell the pins were pretty hard.

I like the tap idea alot. I'll try it soon.

I agree about the price. I was planning to replace mine someday but I'm so far away from that point that I wasn't going to deal with it till later. But a friend is dropping off some wheels and other items at his chromer and the guy said that since he was already spending so much money, he would do a load of small parts for free or very little extra depending on amount and overall condition. I figured I'd be crazy not to get my door handles, side marker bezels, taillight bezels, flip top cap, etc. done while the price is so good.  I even took a few things off my Super Bee and looked through my old grungy parts pile for anything that can be redone.
