Car cocooning - have you guys seen this?
« on: January 12, 2011 - 02:30:42 AM »
I've seen some amazing looking cars that have been "covered" not painted.  Looks great and is supposed to be cheaper (??) than a paint job...

This video is in German, but click forward in the video (to about 3:30) and watch what they do.   It looks really good...

Anyone had experience with something this?  I'm still looking to paint the car this year and this may be a great alternative.

Okay, I guess I feel a little silly...   seems this is being done all around me (advertizements on buses, etc.) and it didn't register...

Here's a video of this being done in the US...

I'll go back in my cave now...

haha Alan

If you like it then go for it but IMO that's something a tuner would do.

I'll paint your car at the school I go to but it will be my first one  :smilielol: :smilielol:

NHRA funnycar teams have been using that process for their bodies for several years now.

Much experience I have (yoda voice).

Owning a sign company and doing this for customs vehicles I would NEVER wrap one of my cars.  As a matter of fact I have many company vehicles and we do not wrap any of them.  There is a time and place for wraps, but it's not long term and getting it off it harder than putting it on.  I charge just has much per hour to remove it as we do to put it on.

Also, it doesn't stick to primer, so you still have to paint the car first.  It also doesn't hide any bad bodywork, so the only real advantage is if you want a rolling billboard.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Cody, thank you for the info.   :2thumbs:  I appreciate the details from an experienced hand at this.

I guess if I have to paint the car to make a wrap stick anyway, then I might as well stop there...     :bigshades:

If nothing else, it's inspired me to look at some of the matte paints.
