Leaf Spring Bracket question. Bracket to body
« on: January 08, 2011 - 09:57:21 AM »
Can anyone tell me how many foot pounds of torque the front leaf spring bracket gets? I'm referring to the four nuts that hold the bracket to the body. Thanks in advance.

According to the 71' Chassis service manual, page 17-7 it says front hanger nut: 30 ft lbs. Pivot bolt is 125. Shackle is 40. U bolt is 45.

Is the pivot bolt the bolt that goes through the front bushing and attaches Spring to the front hanger?

Thanks Mike!

No problem. I just double checked it.

I would recommend to you and anyone else to get the Chassis Service manual and the Body service manual. They are both full of valuable amounts of information that prove to be useful. In fact, I was just reading about re building a power steering box. Something you can't normaly find that easily.

I have a question regarding the rear leaf spring shackle. One end of the shackle is slightly shorter than the other. Which end attaches to the frame and which end attaches to the spring or does it not matter?

Thanks Mike. What year is the engineer drawing from? My car is a 73 & My manual shows the both ends of the shackle the same length. It also shows the pivot bolt installed in the opposite direction. Do you think that it matters? I appreciate the help :2thumbs:

Well the blueprint says it was made on 2/28/69. So it should be from 69 and on up.
The different shackle types are most likely for more than one application.

If I were you, save it as an attachment and zoom up on it to clarify the information on it you're looking for.

the same shackle was used for years , both the pins should be the same length & it should not matter which way up it was installed
