Covan Thunder Road guages
« on: February 08, 2011 - 04:39:56 PM »
I am thinking of ordering a new gauge cluster from covan thunder road for my 73 cuda. What is the difference between mechanical and electrical guages? are the stock ones mechanical or electrical? How easy is a conversion from one to the other?? Just trying to figure out if the 300 cost difference is worth it

thanks in advance

Stock gauges are electric.

Some say that electric is less reliable, although I think some of that is from the "good old days" and technology has since marched on.

Others are electric only as they do not want the risk of hot oil in the interior of the car.

Some gauges are only available as electric...voltage (obviously), fuel, most water temp and some are only mechanical...vacuum.

I just visited the site http://www.covansthunderroad.com/products/sfID1/7/sfID2/15/sfID3/54
May have something to do with an electronic speedo not needed using vintage drive train but may be needed if retrofitting a modern drive train
