What's this wire do?
« on: January 25, 2011 - 08:11:08 AM »
Trying to make my gauges work on my 1974 Challenger Rallye dash, going to start with a new voltage limiter. Ordered one from Dash Worx, got the dash panel loose, find the limiter AWOL. P.O. replaced it with a small resistor setup but at least the wires going to it are labeled.

My question is, I see a wire that has been clipped in the general area. It is a light gray wire with a black tracer that comes out of the wiring harness between the wires that go to the turn signal indicator lights.

Anyone know what this wire is for? I don't think even Chrysler would have had an extra wire sticking out for no good reason. It is just clipped off, not capped over or anything. I didn't see anyhting near there that looked like a good destination, either.

I can think of two gray wires, but I don't recall either having a black tracer.    :dunno:

One is the power to the clock, the other is the signal for the tach...It comes from the "-" side of the coil.

tach or Oil both use grey wires. grey/red is tach, grey/black is oil gauge

Thanks Mopardave-oil gauge not working(along with temp gauge)is why I started this escapade.

I'll check that out.

I had printed a diagram off Mymopar, but it didn't list a gray/black wire that I could find.

My voltage limiter from Dash Worx showed up today(already!), I had a few minutes so I stuck it in. While I was fooling around with the dash, I figured out where my cut wire came from. It is the signal wire for the tach, P.O. ran new wires to the quart-can size Mallory coil mounted on the right fender. He did a half-decent job and the tach works most of the time, so I'll probably just leave it as-is.

I did come on here and do a search for "tachometer", put my mind at ease that 12V is perfectly fine for the tach. Checking and cleaning the connections is on the short list of things to do.
