440 performance differences after auto to manual conversion
« on: February 19, 2011 - 09:36:49 AM »
I have a 440 70 Cuda that currently has a 727 automatic.  I'm about to install a 4 speed from Brewers Performance.  The car was originally a manual car so the installation will be eased a little by not having to fool with the floor center hump or frame rail bracket and will basically be remove the 727 and install the 833.  My question is this.....Due to the gearing differences and other differences between an auto and a manual, will I notice any performance improvements?  i.e. will it seem to have more power etc.  440 is a mild street build approx. 400 HP with a posi 8 3/4 rear end with 3.55 gears.

Don't know about the HP difference, but it will be a heck of a lot of fun to drive!

Manual transmissions usually have less power lose through the drive train than an auto would. So you should have a bit more power to the wheels. Not only that.........but you get to choose when to shift, so that's always fun lol.

When I went from a 727 to a Keisler 5-speed behind my 383, it really seemed to wake that motor up.  It became even more fun to drive.  If given the chance to do it again, I would in a heartbeat.

I'm pretty sure your (horse)power will remain the same......with a tranny change...

Ditto on the more fun to drive quote. I have (3) 4-speed e-bodies now. If they were an auto, they got converted.

Another thing; Some of older 200 thousand mile Saturns, Toyotas, Hondas I've owned, always seemed worn out if backed by an automatic. If they had a manual tranny, they seemed to have more power.

No more power, but the car's power it does have will be put directly to the rear wheels...It will "Seem" to have more power...Traction will be an issue though....
