Upgrading Ignition to MSD - Advice/Help Needed!!!
« on: March 13, 2011 - 07:57:47 AM »
Hello everyone,

I have decided to upgrade my stock ignition system to MSD.  My car is a typical 440 bored .030 over.  I am planning on changing the coil, distributor, and obviously adding an ignition box. I am going to use the following MSD pieces and need some help on the other....

1.  I am going to switch my distributor over to MSD part number 8546
http://www.msdignition.com/Products/Distributors/Chrysler/Street/Strip/8546_-_Chrysler_426,440_Pro-Billet_Distributor.aspx

2.  I am going to use MSD coil - High Vibration Blaster Coil 8222
http://www.msdignition.com/Products/Coils/Race/8222_-_High_Vibration_Blaster_Coil.aspx

3.  The ignition box is where I need some help/advice.  I am not sure whether to go with the -
6A box - http://www.msdignition.com/Products/Coils/Race/8222_-_High_Vibration_Blaster_Coil.aspx
6AL box - http://www.msdignition.com/Products/Ignitions/Street/Strip/Analog/6420_-_MSD-6AL_Ignition_Control_with_Rev_Control.aspx
6AL-2 box - http://www.msdignition.com/Products/Ignitions/Street/Strip/Digital/6421_-_MSD-6AL-2_Ignition_Control.aspx
Digital 6 plus - http://www.msdignition.com/Products/Ignitions/Street/Strip/Digital/6520_-_Digital_6-Plus_Ignition_Control.aspx

4.  Is there any other component I need to swap or upgrade when changing to this type of ignition system?

Please let me  know what you think.....where I am missing something.....I do value your input!!!

Thanks...

I always put a 6AL box on every  performance car I have owned. Never had a problem yet. Instruction that come with them make wiring pretty clear. It's also online if they get lost.

I have a 6A. When installed it noticably improved idle and throttle response. I would have went with the AL except my local guy didn't have one in stock and I didn't want to wait. IMO the MSD (and similar) are far superior to the stock ignition electronics. Some people choose to hide them under the battery tray. When installing, remember to tie the run and start wires together. The new 6 series is smaller and now digital.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the advice.....

I talked with MSD tech support today and have decide to go with the MSD-6AL-2 for my ignition box.  It features the following

•All new housing, digital circuits and performance
•Built-in 2-Step rev control – with rotary dials
•Higher output with up to 135mJ and 535 volts
•Accepts Hall-effect, points and mag pickup triggers
•Managed by an efficient digital control

I am going to use the MSD 8222 high vibration blaster coil along with a new MSD distributor 8546.

I do have one more question:

Are there any modifications I need to make?  Are there any parts I will not use anymore in the current ignition system?  Sorry, I do not know alot about this change yet .....I hope you guys can educate me!

Thanks...

Yep! the best part is you ditch that retarded ballast resistor! :2thumbs: 50% of the reason why I went with an MSD box!

The run and start wires (brown and blue) are tied together after you remove the ballast resistor. It's done to provide 12vdc to the ignition during start and run. After you remove the stock module you may want to remove the mopar ecu connector and cut back the wiring to tidy it up a bit.
