833 front bearing retainer question
« on: March 06, 2011 - 11:19:09 PM »
Hey everyone, I bought a 11" flywheel and steel bellhousing today for my sons 440, The 833 trans front bearing retainer outside dia. is 4.350 and the bell housing hole where the frt brg. retainer fits is 4.800, What can I do to correct this? A freind told me that he thought someone made a ring that would make up the difference in size. Does anybody know of a manufacture the ring?  Thanks

Brewers Performance has them.  Once in the on line store choose the bellhousings icon.

If you have the engine down it's a good time to have the bellhousing indexed to the block and crankshaft.

LAA66, Are you talking about putting a indicator on the crankshaft flange and sweeping the frt. bearing hole in the bell housing.

YES.  The alignment dowels work real well to correct any misalignment.  I would definitely do this step.  Mine was off almost the max amount the dowels could correct.  Now its well within spec, almost perfect.

Yes, if the trans is misaligned it stresses the input shaft bearing, pilot brg, even the throwout brg. Sometimes it won't clutch or shift right either, and even cause a vibration if it's a bit off center.

For added confidence check that the housing surface is parallel to the flywheel and block also. I'm not sure of the exact proceedures though as a shop did mine. Maybe someone here will chime in.
