When I bought the car (74 challenger with rallye dash) it had a late 70s aftermarket cassette player in place of the stock radio.  Fortunately the dash was not altered so I can put a stock radio back in.  Unfortunately, this radio also included an amp that was placed (not mounted just tossed in) the glove box.  So there have been some wiring alterations.

All of the wiring was connected to this amp.  This includes a fused red wire (power) and several (I believe 4) black wires.  The dash includes a Rear Speaker fader, but it looks like it was bypassed when the amp was installed (turning it did nothing). And of course the crossover box for the rears is missing. The cassette unit and the amp connected via a single thick cable.

I picked up a stock radio off ebay.  It fits into the dash without issue. The replacement glove box liner and crossover box should be arriving in a few days.  But now I'm trying to figure out how to wire everything back in.  A quick look at the stock radio shows me 4 wires (red, black, green/black, and purple maybe pink?). So hot, speakers and the light (the radio is case grounded to the body I'm assuming).   But I can't figure out where the antenna connects.  On the cassette this was just a simple plug in. I'm obviously missing something?  The rear speaker fader looks to still be intact.

Any advice, ideas, warnings, etc would be appreciated.  I can provide pictures as needed.

on the OE radios I've seen the antenna receptacle is in the back, a round hole with smaller round hole, not hard to see but not the cable hanging out like the aftermarkets use.

Not to confuse things, but I haven't seen my stock AM radio, single speaker, in a bit but for some reason I think there is a gray or orange wire?  If I get a chance I'll try to take a peak at it...

Do you have a pciture of the radio?

I just got done installing my AM radio last week.  I don't know how different the FM radios are.  I know they use a crossover attached to the glovebox that my car doesn't have.  I do however have a rear speaker.

Here is how everything hooks up on my AM radio.....

There are four wires comming out of the radio. (red/orange and green/black)  The main power wires are red and orange.  They just plug into the main dash harness.  The green and black wires are for the speakers.

There is a separate harness comming out of the back of the fader switch.  That harness has three different branches.(all wires in that harness are green and black)  One connection goes to the rear speaker wiring.(the connector is in the drivers side kick panel area)  The second connection plugs into the green/black wires comming out of the radio.  The third connection runs to the cener dash speaker.   All of the connectors are different so it's easy to see what connection goes where. 

All E-body radios have the antenna hole on the "bottom" of the radio and use a 90 degree plug.  The antenna hole isn't on the back panel of the radio.

Thanks all, I've located the antenna plug.  I was expecting it to be on the back.

As for the wiring, I'll have a lot of work to do there. The rear speaker fader looks unmolested, but everything else was altered.  The after market radio was wired directly into the fuse block (with it's own fused connection) and 4 black wires (the speakers) all end at the mauled glove box.  I'm not even sure where the standard factory harness for the radio is.  It may have been removed, or it just might be stuffed up under the dash somewhere.


On the plus side while the radio was out of the way I installed a NOS clock and pulled and lubed the speedo cable :)

Okay I've found all the parts to the radio and have it temporarily in place and "working"
Has anyone ever done a conversion from AM to AM/FM with a single front and 2 rears? 
Currently I have it temporarily wired just to the rears bypassing the fader and the single dash speaker.  This configuration does not use a cross over unit, but I do have on that I can install.

I am just finishing a 71 Cuda dash restoration and changing an AM radio to an AM-FM with a single mono front speaker with stereo rear speakers was part of it. I can help you with that. I am up to my eyeballs this weekend getting it finished, tested and will get in touch with you to walk through what I did. It's not rocket science, just what parts you have/need, etc to make it work is what I can try and help with. I'll be in touch.

I'll list what I currently have just to save some time:
Stock Rear speaker fader and harness for a car with AM radio (I believe I need to replace this with a 5 speaker version)
Crossover box (6 wire)
E Body AM/FM stereo (1 power/light connector, 1 T shaped speaker connector)
Single speaker Dash, with speaker (currently wired to the rear speaker knob)
2 rear speakers, with new wiring running to the glove box
1 "middle" harness which converts the single T shaped speaker connector into 2 speaker connectors

The three speaker front and rear stereo with fader knob under the clock is a stupid circuit that mixes the stereo to the center front. Defeating the stereo effect, and minimizing the treble in the rear. The stock rears are 3 oz magnets and black paper center cone. Good for one year.
     The stereo fronts can be fitted with larger 50 watt magnets , by snipping some redundant cross bracing underneath.  The center speaker, I used for the two way CB, you can use it for the phone.  The rear fader is now in the equalizer amp. The rears need 50 watt min. for the radio with out the EQ on. The EQ is for the cassette deck I stuck in the dash (1978) where there is a void for the Air cond. vent. I think a new deck with Mp3 CD DVD deck is replacing the tape/ EQ. soon, after I cap the dash.
     You will never be happy with that factory stereo fader box on the glove comp. Want mine, make an offer. I also added a stereo switch for the radio / tape selection inside the top of the ash tray. And noise filter for the power supply.
