Last ditch effort!!!
« on: March 15, 2011 - 08:28:15 PM »
:banghead:Ok, before I get all worked up trying to find the problem and just tear it all out, I want to know if anyone else has had this problem.

I am getting ready to put EFI and an OD auto in and both require brains to operate and I want everything electrical working before I start. (And yes I know all about painless wiring and thats the last option along with the aftermarket gauge cluster for Cudas)

70 Barracuda, Rally dash - my voltage meter works and thats it. The fuel, oil and temp just peg out with the ignition to "run" and its not fast when it does it, they slowly move. A few months ago, on here, I was told it was some sort of a resistor that needed to be added. I read up on that and thats not going to fix my problem. All gauges stopped working at the same time so it has to be something like a ground or something!!!

Any advice????

Electronic is not my strong point , but I believe that the voltage limiter controls all the gauges except the amp gauge?

Sounds like your 5v voltage regulator for the gauges is toast. If the 5v goes too high it will cause the gauges to read high. By voltmeter I'll assume you mean ammeter, doesn't receive power from the 5v regulator so will behave normally. The original 5v limiter is a simple bi-metalic strip that is famous for causing the gauges to behave as you describe. Get (or make) a new one.

the guages must be grounded for the guage to rise , they must have too high voltage if the guages peg out , you need a new 5 volt regulator

Voltage limiter / regulator.

Might want to look at getting a Solid State limiter to replace the 1950s technology that came with the car. Basically uses a chip to step the voltage down vs. a metal strip. Much steadier and less prone to failure.
