    Hi,
    I have a 73 340 cuda that was parked in field for years, with no history. I got it running kind off, and am having trouble to get it starting and running. Replaced the timing chain, it was off a couple teeth and is correct now, problem is the oil smells like gas and spark plug smells like gas and seems to have a weak spark. I have replaced the oil and plugs and still have the same problem. Also replaced the coil, distributer, ballast resister, starter relay, and carb.  :banghead: Any Idea's??????

    it is highly probable that the cylinders may have washed. does it sound like it may be cranking over a little too fast (like low compression) rings could be stuck too , but i'd bet they just washed down . the cure is to take a oil squirt can, pull the plugs and squirt the cylinders down (about 1/8 to 1/4 cup usually less)  let it sit there working thru the rings. you can bump the starter (but dont give a crank) to help it along . after it has sat a couple hours almost all the oil will be gone. then crank in short burst to clear cylinders.put in plugs . start her up

    Welcome to cc.com tumbob!! Great place here for all MOPAR people!!  Happy Holidays are also in order!!  Now why would someone park a great car like that in a field for years??   :dontknow:   Silly people.   :ack:  :ack: Sounds like you've replaced alot of your engine already . . . and if you think that gas is in your oil . . . I would say you have a larger problem!! I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of it soon . . . and of course, PLEASE post some pictures!!  We LOVE pictures!!  :beer:

    I would assume the carb is flooding , have you put a kit into it or put a different carbon it yet ??

    I'd check the fuel pump to see if gas is getting past the diaphram into the oil.

    Thanks for the ideas, I replaced the stock fuel pump with an electric unit cuz I thought it was the diaphram, that didn't help, I will try the oil thing next and check the carb floats(now a used holly). Sounds like it cranks slow w/new starter, not fast, does that still sound washed? Hope you all had a good Christmas!!! :)

    everytime I ran into a washed down mopar it seemed to spin a little faster than normal (loss of compression from rings not having a seal. but dry cylinder could still drag it down I suppose. I know wash down used to be a common problem when you let a mopar sit for awhile and the carb would bleed down. You might want to start at the basics. Compression test (wet and dry). If its sat long time I would still soak it down for awhile to help loosen any stuck rings (cant hurt and could help). Another thing you say seems to have weak spark. define weak. everyone looks at spark a little differently. Weak by it doesn't jump far or weak cuz its orange?

    have you checked the battery /system voltage ?cars that sit develop hi resistance in the exposed wiring from corrosion and poor connections. Also I dont know if this is an interference motor or not but if the t/chain was bad did it bend any valves? that ought to keep ya buzy ...lol

    If it's been sitting, the old gas in the tank gets gross. All your sucking is junk.  :puke:
    Got to get the old gas out first, then blow the lines out and refill. Always something simple I always say.
    Probably rebuild the carb too.

    Thanks for all the replys, just ran it out of gas trying it tonight, thinking I should redo all the flex fuel lines now thats its empty. Spark still seems weak, maybe its just perception, voltage is ok at the coil, ECU seems ok and new plug wires(yes had one crossed, now good), battery is on charger and good. I still need to oil the cyl's. Sorry about the big pic, just that was what came up, I will try to repost new picture after getting all the trim back on. fun,fun....have a great new year!! :patriot:
