Steering shaft length
« on: March 11, 2011 - 07:05:25 AM »
Would someone know the length of the steering shaft for a 74 Barracuda with power steering. Would like to check it before I install it into the column. Thanks John.

My '73 is together...exposed part of the shaft from where it leaves the tube to where it enters the coupler is 9" , the coupler is 3.25 total 12.25.... I read that the manual shaft is 2" longer.

Thanks for the info on the shaft. Would anyone know the length of the shaft itself ? Thanks John.

I thought the shaft that attached to the steering gear box slid in and out. Mine did, is it broke?

There is a pin that has to be punched out of the knuckle on the shaft to slide it off.

Right. The knuckle goes between the gear box and the shaft. But the shaft coming out of the column slides for adjustment or in case of an accident, correct? It does on mine.

Not exactly.

The shaft is two pieces and is collapsable, but the two peices are held together by molded plastic that goes through two holes in the sections of column, and the plastic sheers in the event of an accident, collapsing the column.

If you colum is sliding in and out, it is usable (once installed the column can not really move), but it may have already been collapsed.

Thanks. I suspect that what happend is the guy I was referred to for the column rebuild did not reassemble it properly {he did a LOUSY job}. So it slides in and out.

does it have play when you twist the bottom shaft in the top ? if so it should have very little.
