Ralley cluster woodgrain decal
« on: January 03, 2005 - 05:52:21 AM »
I put on the decal overlay on my cluster and it won't stay down.  It bubbles up in a couple of places, like the adhesive isn't good.  I bought this a while back, maybe a year.  Starting to wonder if I need to replace it?

I already tried injecting a couple of drops of glue with a syringe but it still doesn't lay flat.

Anyone have this problem?

Yes
I've tried starting at one end and working to the other. I tried starting in the middle and working my way to each end. Same problem. Mine doesn't look too bad, so I'll probably live with it for now, but the glue sure doesn't have the bite that the original decal must have had.

I have yet to do mine and the very thought of makes me want to do something else on the car.  Did you guys remove the original decal?  If so, how did you do it?  I removed the decal off the console plate which wasn't so bad, but the gauge plate decal seems much thinner.

I did mine as well - new decal, same results.
The kick in the pants was my original was not all that bad ( mental note, if it ain't broke don't fix it ).
I was trying to get my interior to perfect ( new headliner, carpet and seats - so what's left )

I did NOT remove the original. Plus the replacement for the switches, did not have any of the labels printed ( lights, wiper ect. )

Has anyone looked to see if they have a thin formica veneer that is close to the same color/grain? I know they have thinner products available for applying to contours and rounded surfaces.

The original ones were not a decal, they were either silk-screened or some type of photo transfer process. Notice the woodgrain is on a thin piece of metal. the metal was a flat piece, the image was transfered on to it, then it was bent and installed on the dash. I've had good luck using the vinyl decals, just have to be careful, but they will begin losing thier grip in awhile.

The original definetly wasnt a decal.  Where did you guys buy your decals?  I've talked to performance auto graphics who have all the possible combinations of switch panel labels so it looks right.  They say the original was a lithograph onto bare aluminum.  I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the quality of their decals, as thats where I would probably buy one.

I bought mine from Legendary probably 3 years ago.  I would bet all these places buy from a single supplier.  I can't belive there's enough demand to support multiple places reproducing these.

The more I think about it, there have probably been 1-2 large production runs, and then they sit on shelf for who knows how long, that's probably the reason for the inconsistant adhesion.

I just saw this on one of my antique jukebox restoration forums. Looks like this could be an alternative to the adhesive backed decal although more expensive. Their results are amazing and the videos make it look really easy. This is a painted on process that you can do with the right tools. Ck it out here:

Year One used to sell a real wood veneer for the e-body rallye and non rallye dashes, but I have not seen that in years. it was EXPENSIVE. But these decals dont hold up, I just installed restored gages in my 74 Cuda and left the bezela alone...they are not too bad, and the decals don't impress me. someone needs to come up with a viable replacement for the originals

I'm with you there - there has got to be a better solution than cheap woodgrain contact paper. You can buy veneer but you aregoing to spend a lot of time detailing and trimming the veneer around the gauges. Also, it would have to be a very thin veneer for the rally dash as the accent rings dont sit too proud above the surface of the panel.

The painted on product seems viable but expensive. Also you would need to be able to mask off or otherwise protect the raised accent when you painted and rolled the grain print on the work.
