bondo over sefl etching prime?r
« on: April 06, 2011 - 06:05:48 PM »
I searched and could not find a good answer. I am using duplicolor self etching primer on the dutchman panel. Can i apply bondo over this, or do I have to do the mud work first ?  Duplicolor self etching primer may or not be equeal to epoxy primer, but it beats breaking out the spray gun and mixing up a batch of epoxy primer.  Any help would I would be grateful for. And is the duplicolor self etching primer crap ? I have the day off tommorow, so if i need to go to the paint store for epoxy primer i will, I just want get it sealed up. thnx ahead of time.

I wouldn't jeopardize all the work you've done by putting the cheap primer on in such a rust-prone area.  Spring for the epoxy primer, and when you get the window in, fill the gap between the glass and panel with the caulk to keep water from pooling there.  Just snapping the molding back in place could scratch right through the paint and Duplicolor, but the epoxy would be unfazed.   :2cents:

Is there a window of time when you must apply filler over epoxy ? I am assuming that you have to sand the epoxy before filler.I have DP50 epoxy primer. 2:1 ratio mix.  I was thinking of using those spray bottles you can fill yourself, I forget the name, but it has a glass baby bottle type paint container and it screws into the propellant. Is this ok to use with epoxy ?

Better yet, get a Sata mini jet gun. Sata makes them for touch up.

Bad idea ,do not use junk primer on rust prone area, when using epoxy usually there is at least few days window ,I'd probably wait a day before skimming filler

Ok, you convinced me of three things. Use epoxy pimer, I bought the dp5o, and use a good gun. and 3rd apply skimcoat with in a week. No scuffing ??

Either do the filler work on the bare metal or over epoxy primer to assure adhesion.  Any area that would require more than an nickel thick filler layer should be worked out with a hammer and dolly prior to filler work.   :2cents:
