Possible buy
« on: June 01, 2011 - 03:43:47 PM »
I've been obsessed with challengers the past few years and have been on this site (quietly) regularly checking in on anything to see if I had a shot in the dark of ever owning one. Well this one came along. I'd like to see input on whether it's a good buy or should I stay away. The only reason I'm coming out of the woodwork now is because it is only an hour and a half away. If it's something I should be wary of maybe someone else can do something with it. I am new to this and me only being 20 puts me at a disadvantage. I have a few mechanic friends who would go inspect it with me but I'd need to know questions to ask and red flags. PM's or just comments would both be greatly appreciated.

I've been watching that car - always wanted a real shaker car. It will be really nice when it's done but will cost a great deal to get there. It looks like it needs a ton of metal work. I would guess it will sell for close to $10k but plan on spending at least another $25k-$30K on it after it's in your garage and that's if you can do most of the work yourself.
I will be putting My 1970 340 numbers matching Challenger A66 project (burnt Orange/Burnt orange)up for sale in a week or 2 once I get parts organized and take pictures. I recently bought a convertible and am trying to focus on that one. It was a very solid car that had quarter skins & a trunk floor put on it. Other then that it was rust free. The #'s engine is rebuilt and painted, suspension is all rebuilt, metal pretty much done,  seats reupolstered already, complete except for radiator and comes with tons of new parts fuel lines, brake lines, new wiring harnesses, etc... It will need minimal work to get ready for paint. I'm not sure what  exactly I would take for it but probably low teens.  I don't know what you can afford but I can guarantee you will be miles ahead with mine or another one closer to done then the ebay one above though.

Chris may be trying to talk you out of bidding against him :)  However, take what he says to heart because he knows what is involved with these cars.  I'm not a mechanic or a bodyman either, but I had access to people that knew more than me and I'm the type of person that commits fully to a project (I don't lose interest like a lot of the guys selling these cars).  With proper commitment you can teach yourself to weld, do bodywork, etc. but you need to be fully committed to doing the task and not give up when it gets tough.

I've been where you are now.  I took the tough road and didn't go with a car that was an easy restoration.  I went with the rusty pile of junk that needed a ton of sheet metal.  I don't think I'd do it the same way again if I could do it all over again, but I also will follow through and finish my car.

Jon

Definately won't be bidding on that one I promise you. I told the wife no more cars  until I get the vert running at least. Just don't want to see a new comer make the same mistakes I did in the past. I've bought a couple of basket cases in the past and they sat in my garage in a million pieces for years. For example I spent $7,500 on a 71 Cuda when times were much better, Spent about $10,000-$12,000 on parts. Spent probably hundreds of hours working on it (metal work) Then I got married, had kids, moved twice and finally sold it for less than half of what I had into not counting labor and it still was in horrible shape and needed another $25,000 dumped into it to get it nice. I don't buy big projects anymore & at 20 years old I recommend you buy something that you can drive while you restore or an easy project that you can have on the road in a short amount of time because life (school, parties, girls, kids, house) may get in the way real soon for you.

the responses are right,,it is a project and unless you have the cash to finish it it will be alot of work, and sit with out the cash flow,i like it as it is a shaker but be well prepared for the work and if it doesnt sell for much more it will be good but will probably go for 10k or more, but the market is down.. go look at it as it is close to you and inspect the frame closely,,he says its good but i would look for myself,,hope your good at sheet metal work ,,i would love to have it but couldnt afford it right now,,you could probably find one better for the right money and less work,,if you think you can do the job then buy it but look closely at the work it will take and money,,if you have the skills it would be a nice car

I'd say you would go over your head on this and a many yr long build.  Look into cars out west. Rust free cars with a few dents and have it shipped to you.You would be ahead a whole lot farther that way.  If you did happen to buy it. You may contact member  wagesofsin about putting it back together for you. He is not far and does exceptional good work  but that bb 71 rt shaker car will go up on price in the next 5 days on auction.  Considering your age and abilities as you have said, will make you a slave to strangers that want your wallet.   Watch what meangreen posts up all the time. He can find some nice cars and finds some priced good

Be patient, work and save your money and buy a car that is at least a decent driver for your first car.  This is a cool car, but would also break the bank restoring it, especially if you have never done one before.   :2cents:

Wow this one went for $7,200 not bad. I expected it would blow up at the end of the auction but nothing. I hope my car does alot better then that.
