Solid lifter cam - my 1st - how much "noise"?
« on: July 10, 2011 - 01:22:35 PM »
So my 499 is my 1st solid lifter cam.
Got the 1st fire up on it just a little bit ago.

The top end makes a bit of noise, maybe the best way I can describe it as is almost like a rod-knock, but it definitely is not a rod-knock.
I'm running shaft mounted roller tip lifters & double checked the cams suggested valve lash.
Thoughts and opinions please...

PS..  this thing's a monster!!

Hey Jeff
it will rattle , I usually lash the cams a couple of thou tight so if it calls for .028 I will lash at .026 hot
the lunati cams lash at .016 so I set them at .015 hot
adding a baffle between the intake & valley pan can quiet the noise slightly but it wall always have a clatter to it , but it should not be a single noise just a multiple rattle . I assume you have shimmed the rockers so they are evenly over the tip of the valves , I usually use a lash cap to protect the valve tip .
I don't know how to describe the noise in words  LOL
So you have driven it & I guess it makes good power ....as in Monster !! :2thumbs:
Did you make Carlisle ?

Solids are really never quiet.  I love the sound.  Neil is right.  The more aggressive the cam, the more the noise too. As in fast ramps.  Comp xe and some lunati cams seem to make the most to me.

I almost associated the sound to an old sewing machine?  That's just me though!

Didn't make it to Carlisle at all this year, but I read everyone had a good time.

Yeah the sound can be hard to describe ( I never was around any old sewing machines I guess  ) but there is some "rattle" I guess is a good way to put it... nothing that seemed too harsh.

I got it fired up, made sure there were no leaks, knocked the dizzy in close & was so excited had to take it for a spin... and she hauls! Traction will be a problem lol.

Iron block & aluminum head, and I'm at the .014 cold. did not check hot, just pulled a cover to make sure after the 1st run everything looked OK.

I did check when assembling...
Rocker arm to shaft clearance, obviously the lash, also the rocker arm tip to valve tip positioning ( making sure the tip was over the middle of the valve stem )

The sound itself is not a killer for me, more of just a confirmation that some noise is OK.

This is going to be a lot of fun  :2thumbs:

PS!! It just struck me CP says .015 HOT... as I did mine cold.
I could heat up and hang valves open I would think ( have not gone on any real drive yet ) so will have to re-adjust!!

Yeah as Sledgehammer said the setting is different cold , alum heads expand so your valves will be loose when hot , warm it up reset & you will be fine , if one seems to have very excessive lash or has to be readjusted pull the lifter & make sure the lobe / lifter is ok

My Lunati has a 0.016" tappet gap with 273 style Crane rockers. She is rattly at idle. Way it is with solid lifters.
