74 Chally 383 4 speeds VS 74 chally 360 4 speeds
« on: May 12, 2011 - 11:38:37 AM »
So, its been awhile since I was active in my mopar search.

I found two 74 Challenger within my price range.
Both are about th same price and only some feature make them apart. Both are in great shape.

The first one as a 360 4 speed, plum crazy, rallye dash, go wing, T/A front lip...
vs
the other as a 383 4 speed, brownish color, standard dash, cop wheels...

I think its down to color and engine BB vs SB.

What you guys think??
The brown chally is not an usual color, which I like, but the plum is really nice....
Both require little small tlc which doesn't matter to me.

I would go with the the one that makes you happy.... :misbehaving:  (the easy answer)

you should look closely at both, which one is closer to what your overall goal is? If you buy one and have to make a bunch of changes to it, or spend $$$ to get it to your goal, you may be come frustrated.

P.S.  Go with the 1974-360-4   :jumping:

Do you want a sleeper (brown 383 with dog dishes) or a screamer (plumcrazy with magnums)  both would be a blast, but for different reasons.  you could do some mod's with the 383, or you could go for a stock look with the 360.

coin flip time!  good luck!

The plum chally is closer to home, only a 2 hours drive and won't need local safety inspection, but the brown one is 7h00 drive, which is more sour to do plus inspection...still I like the sleeper look.

I like the BB 383, but sure could do a nice stroker on both.

Flip the coin indeed....

I'd go with the one the grabs my attention, in this case the plumb car. Nice 70 style badge on the front fender. I like how they have chrome trim all the way around the grill(not the factory look).  You can always find a 383 cheap enough to rebuild and drop in there if the 360 isn't stout enough for you.

There is no replacement for displacement or so they say. The 383 can be a real screamer with the right parts or spend a dollar and stroke. The 360 can also be a big motor with a crank change and should cost you less overall, if you are going to use it as a cruiser I would go with the Plum Crazy color as everyone will notice it.
I do personally prefer street sleepers but now we want to show off our pride and joy's.

If it's a num match 360 4 spd. Then that would be the car I would want. Very rare car. Easy to put any engine combo in that suits you

The plum not sure if its a numbers match, but its a 360/4speed original and it was yellow.

But i might add this to my choices  :)

I prefer motor work to body work so I'd choose the nicer exterior.

As I have a '74, I was quite interested in reading the comments.   What caught my eye was similar to MEK -  the chrome trim on the hood/fenders (like a '70) vs. the original look of the '74.....   Of course, some of us like the bling factor more than others.....

Good luck on the decision - it's nice to have choices :)

Seeing as how I own a '74-360 4 spd, I'm kinda prejudiced, but the combination of better appearance, equal strokability, gas prices and the proximity also make me lean towards the 360. But like the boys say, it's your nickel and YOU have to "sleep with her". Decisions, decisions!
