72-74 Challenger headlight bezels
« on: May 26, 2011 - 07:22:38 PM »
I received my new headlight bezels today but am having some issues installing them.  Is there a right and left side to these?  Can someone remove one left side and one right side bezel and check something for me?

Two of my origonal bezels have the number 3573242 on the back.  The other two have 3573243 on the back.

All four new bezels have the same number on them.  3573243

Never mind.  I figured it out.  The numbers are the same but the bezels are different.  I just need to look harder next time.

Got them installed and they look good.  The new screws I got from R/T Specialties weren't a match to the origonal ones though.  The origonal ones were tapered at the tip.  The new ones were not tapered and wouldn't screw into the nuts.  I had to grind a bevel on all the screws so that they would work.

Those are something that I need as well. Would you mind me asking where and how much? As for the screws, unless they're SS, they'll rust since you ground through the plating. Easier to go get the correct countersunk head ones.

BE&A and PG Classics sell them.  I thought about having the origonal ones redone but this way I save some money and still have the origonal parts if I need them some day.

The screws are SS.  The heads are tapered like the origonal...they aren't as large a diameter though.  The origonal ones were slightly tapered at the begining of the threads.  They also had a paint cutter slot in them.  The new ones weren't tapered at all and didn't have a paint cutter.  I just ground the very tip of the screw.(not the head)   I assume the correct origonal ones are no longer made...otherwise Tom would have sent them.

I used stainless screws on mine and chased all the threads with an 8-32 tap. Made life much easier. Doesn't hurt to work in a machine shop sometimes.

The strange thing was that the origonal screws threaded into the nuts just fine.  The new ones would thread in until they reached the end of the nut...then they just stopped.

I have 7 of the 8 original screws.  1 of them was stripped and had to be drilled out.  I figured the new screws might be a little different.  That's why I got 8 new ones instead of just 1.

You got that right.  My father-in-law just retired from Oral-B a couple months ago.  He working in the machine shop there.  Last weekend he made me an antenna nut installation tool.  About 10 years ago, Oral-B got all new machining equipment.  The old stuff still worked perfectly...they just thought since it was old, it had to be junk.  My father-in-law bought a lathe cheap and has it in the corner of his shop.
