Bumper Question
« on: November 12, 2002 - 04:32:31 AM »
I was wondering if I could remove those huge rubber bumpers from my rear bumper on a 74 'Cuda and replace them with the chrome pieces that go down to the rear valance like on 70 and 71's without buying a new bumper, will I have to drill holes?? Also would I have to buy the new rubbers for those also that go into the rear valance? Those biggo rubber bumpers look nasty to me. I am just going to remove the ones from the front bumper. Thanks  :)

You can certainly replace them with bumper bolts but I`m not sure if the 70 parts will fit

To suck up the bumper up to the car like in 70 to 72, could I use 72 bumper brackets?? I would hate to change that rear bumper. It is in good shape but it those ugly huge rubber bumpers. What where they thinking. The front ones are going to be replaced with bumper bolts but the rear ones have to have something going into the rear valance. What can I do to make it look better. ??? any suggestions???
Thanks

I think you can just add the bumberettes from a 72 to your car all you would need is the plastic that fills in the space between the valance and the bumperette. My friend has a 73 cuda which has the big rubber bumper guards and he just took them off and put the 72 guards on with no problem. As for the front I think Chryco is right just put bumper bolts in the holes, I think that is what you meant Chryco? It would work.

Hey nosrettaw. To answer your "What were they thinking?" question, Chrysler didn't have much choice. '73 was when the insurance industry was pushing hard for the 5mph bumpers. >:( So, to satisfy Uncle Sam without having  to redesign the front and back of the E bodies, Chrysler came up with the bumperettes. :P

The 70 - 72 rear bumpers will bolt on in place of the 73-74 style

Chryco So would I need the whole 70 - 72 bumper and the brackets as well? If I could get around using those filler pieces I will.  And I agree with you they look better tucked up against the body. Like in 70-72. So I will not be able to use my old bumper and brackets at all right?
Thanks again  Steve ;D

I believe the bumper will work you just need to remove te huge beam in behind it & use 70-72 style mounts
