308 small block head Questions
« on: May 11, 2006 - 07:55:20 AM »
What are the best years for these heads?  Can they be bolted on a 340 with out any modifications, if not, what needs to be done to get them to work with a 340?  Will they take the stock 340 valve covers.  What do a set of these heads cost from the junk yard.

Thanks

87-92 trucks
they bolt on & use stock valve covers
I recommend porting them & switching to aftermarket springs & retainers to match the cam you are using as they use a short exhaust valve spring with a rotator on them

Chryco, do you have the full casting number for these heads, so I can make sure I get the correct ones.  Also what motors did these come on, 318, 360 or both?  Any idea what they will cost?

Also will I need to put in bigger valves or are the stock size fine.  I'm hoping to build a 340 with about 400hp at the flywheel.

Thanks

I can get the full #
they were only on the 360 trucks , the 318 had a smaller version casting # 302 , they work with stock valves or you can install the larger 2.02 intakes
I can get them for around $100 a pair depending which wrecker I hit

Thanks for the info.

Also, are those heads hard to come by where you are?  I have called 3 wrecking yards in Phoenix, AZ and nobody has them.
