oil gauge
« on: May 26, 2011 - 12:33:08 PM »
I need  12v wire to power a redline repo oil gauge. If I use the stereo wire will it not blow the fuse?

It's not likely to blow the fuse. Especially if you have an after market radio that draws far less current than the originals. I would sure give it a shot.   :grinyes:

Not sure if this is applicable to you, but on my 73, there were two empty 12v slots on the fuse box. One constant on and one for ACC. Obviously you'd want the ACC one. That's a nice clean place to safely wire something in if it hasn't already been used.

Am I missing something?...Would a reproduction gauge not need to be powered through the voltage limiter?

I would assume no. They're prob meant to run on 12v while the originals use little coiled strips of metal that open up and move the needle with current. That's why they have to be stepped down.

That's my understanding, at least. :-)

I think Bullitt's point is that it's only a repro. if it hooks in like the original.  Otherwise it's not a repro. it's a replacement or an alternative.

That's what I was thinking, a reproduction might need the lowered voltage but I see that what Redline makes to fit the standard dash has the internals of a new gauge which would not.
