Newby to Forum with 70 Cuda Woes
« on: June 30, 2011 - 07:53:14 PM »
Hello,

I am new to your forum, but not new to Barracudas and Challengers. I bought my first car in 1978, a 1 owner 72 Plymouth Barracuda with a 318. It was cool. Then I bought a 72 Cuda 340 with a 4 speed in 1987. Since I was in the Air Force, I was staioned in England in 1988. I left both cars at home, and my mom sold them when I was in England because her husband complained about them. In 1998 I bought a 72 Barrcuda with a 340. I had it for 3 years. But then I had to sell it because I had to move again, and I did not have the room for it. But In 2003, I found a Sub Lime 70 Cuda. It had sat for 14 years, but it drove fine. I had it sitting for a few years, and now I have been trying without success, to start it so I can restore it. I replaced the Starter, Starter Relay, Control Module, and the Coil, and I still don't get any spark. I am about ready to junk it, due to frustration. Does anyone have any idea why I can't get any spark? Your Assistance is appreciated. Thank You.

Regards,
Ariovistus

How about the ballast resistor?

The starter switch could be bad, too.

Distributer? Points?

Pull the dist. and spin it with the cap on and the key in the run position.

Just got through getting the Scout running ,as it too had no spark. Pulled the points, sanded the contacts and the pig fired right up

I'm guessing you had multiple problems since you put a starter in which would solve a no crank problem, but still have no spark which is another story. You stated control module, so I'm also guessing the car has electronic ignition. Ballast resistorfor the coil, or possibly the pickup inside the distributor---which just went bad on me. Car ran 1 day and didn't the next.

Thank you everyone for your comments /advice. My engine is a 383 Magnum, with a converted ignition to a mopar electronic. I put in a new ballast resistor too. The starter is a new hi-torque starter. The car used to run great. I will check what you mentioned. Thank you.

Welcome! Speaking from personal experiences be sure to check the basics, Voltage at the ballast resister and  grounds. Good luck.

Welcome to the board.       I would use a multimeter to see that at least 12V is getting to the ballast resistor with the ignition in both start & run  positions.  A lot of no start issues have been traced to bad switches or poor connections causing no or low voltage supplied to the ignition system.
