Just gathering parts for my 451" build.... wondering if I need one? :dunno:

all it does is keep excessive oil of the front seal but my machinist leaves them off saying the seal runs too dry with it in place

That makes scence? My BB Buick had a rope seal on it, so in that case I can see the need for the slinger as the rope would always be wet with oil anyhow and keeping excess oil off it would be a good idea to prevent leaks I guess? With the newer Viton type seals maybe it's not so nessesary anymore?

I thought the slinger was for oiling the timing chain.  PK

It is, as it performs two vital jobs from factory. I prefer to run 'em. Simply because if you don't and something happens, that will be one of your first questions...

I do not use anything other than splash oil from the pan. some guys drill a small 1/16 hole in the lifter galley plug behind the cam geat to give some extra oiling.

So do you leave off the slinger?

Brad, my 520 has one on my Donovan, my 511 i'm building right now will have one on it to, it's also a milodon I just do it for lube purposes, I always thought. These are race engines tho. Prob don't need them.
