Keying door locks
« on: June 13, 2011 - 10:49:05 PM »
Recently it looked like someone tried to break into my car, unsuccessfully, but bent the thin steel around the door lock key hole and now it is difficult to insert the key. I bought two new lock cylinders. I would like them to use the same key as the ignition. Is it possible to rework the key mechanism yourself, or do have to bring them to a locksmith?  :dunno:

I'm sure you could do it, try taking one of the old ones apart & keep track of the order of the pieces & change them into your new cylinder if you feel confident.
It's been a while but the last locks I had changed(dead bolts) only cost around 5-10 per cylinder.

is really is not that hard to do , there is 3 parts in each hole , the bottom pin , top pin & spring , if you transfer the ones from your old locks it should work but the pins may be badly worn , you may have the coorect length pins in the new locks , but you have to keep the bottom & top pin together as a set , the longer the bottom pin the shorter the top pin or the stack becomes to tall to work

Yes, it is not hard to do at all. Worst case, take them to a lock smith and have them do the work. Then they can fix any tumblers that are worn.
