Barracuda Hi-rise Intake Hood Clearance Concerns
« on: June 17, 2011 - 12:09:13 PM »
I'm gathering my parts together to change the stock 2 bbl intake on my Barracuda's 318 to an Edelbrock LD4B intake & 650 cfm Thunder carb.  It has the stock Rallye hood, but also has the insulation from the factory.  With a stock 4 bbl air cleaner am I going to have clearance issues?  Does anyone here have the same or similar setup and can say this is going to clear my hood with or without taking off the underhood insulation?  I really want to run the stock air cleaner so if its going to be an issue I may look at other intake alternatives.  I've also got a stock 340 iron intake which also looks taller than the 318's but perhaps not as much as the Ede.  All help will be appreciated!

Oh, and if anyone has hints on how to get old rusted water nipples out of an aluminum intake I need advice on that too!

Thanks, Jim

Fitment shouldn't be an issue, I have almost the same set up on my 70 barracuda with a flat hood with no issues.

I have an LD4B with edelbrock 650 cfm.

As for getting the water nipples out.....heat them up and apply some bees wax, then a GOOD pair of Vise Grips.

Awesome, thanks.  Just so I'm sure, you are running a stock aircleaner, too?  I figured it would fit with some type of drop base aircleaner but I'm going for the 'mostly' stock look.

Thanks again, Jim

Jim,

I am running a two inch Edelbrock air cleaner.

I still have my stock air cleaner and will try it tomorrow and see if the hood closes.

Thanks Ron, that would be awesome.  I really appreciate it and hopefully I'll be able to return the favor sometime.

I seriously doubt you will have a problem with clearance , the LD is no taller than the factory 340 intake

I'm sure you're right, I just didn't want to get the intake installed and find out that I'm .5" too high or something like that.  The stock 340 intakes do look pretty tall come to think of it and they obviously work with the stock air cleaner.

Thanks, Jim

Jim,

It will work!  I put my stock air cleaner on, it wouldn't sit all the way down on the 4 barrel carb because it is a 2 barrel air cleaner, and closed the hood and it didn't hit.

So you are good to go.

Here is a current picture of my set up.

Fantastic, thanks!  How much did adding the intake & carb wake up your engine?  Did you change cams or anything else at the same time?  I'm not looking for miracles here, but I wouldn't mind a little more oomph out of the Barracuda.

Thanks again, I really appreciate you checking for me.

No cam change, I just added the intake and carb.  It now pulls hard through out the power band.

A set of headers and a cam would really make it sing.

You will like the add drive-ability.
