rear end gasket confusion

as long as i have to dissassemble this rear end agian to put the adjusters in I may as well try and clear up the confustion about the rear end flange gaskets.
I have a white foam gasket and a matching steel gasket.

In the Jims auto parts catalog it says both gaskets go between the axle flange and the brake backer plate.

In the year one catalog it says the foam gasket goes between the brake backer plate and the axle retainer plate and does not mention or show the steel gasket at all.

Where do I put the foam gasket and where do I put the matching steel gasket?

Metal first, then backing plate, then foam, then axle.

I'd apply a thin coating of grease to the bearing cup prior to installation in the bearing bore, to prevent corrosion.
That's what the Manual said.

Also to the axle seal, so not to scar it up putting the axle back in. Thats just me.

when you say axle, do you mean the axle housing (rear end housing) or axle retainer plate.
It looks like you sandwhich the backer plate between the foam and the metal gasket.
but which one goes against the axle housing flange (rear end housing flange) the foam or metal?

Axle is the part where the wheel bolt to. Only the axle is called the axle. Housing, flange or bearing, mean just that. Of course axle housing, axle flange or axle bearing, means the same thing. Just how descriptive you want to be.
