I will add that the 383 ran fantastic with the AVS with two exceptions: first it had a nasty habit of 'coughing' (don't know what else to call it, wasn't really a backfire) when I floored it during launches. It wouldn't die completely, but the RPMs would drop to around idle and then I'd have to build back up from there. The only time I ever lost a street race it did this and the big block Nova was too fast for me to come back on. I had the last laugh though because when I asked for a re-run the Nova driver had blown his engine and asked for a ride back to town! Secondly, it was only a 625 cfm (I think) and I had to go to a bigger carb when I built my motor with more cam, compression, etc. But for around town driving, the throttle response was crisp with the AVS and perfect for the street.
