Steering column: which one for my 72 challenger
« on: July 02, 2011 - 06:54:22 AM »
I'm rebuilding a steering column for my 72 challenger. When I bought the car, it came with an incorrect column.

The shifter is on the floor.
I have two columns, one wit a shaft length of app. 100 cm, about 40 inches, and one with a shaft-length of app. 85 cm, about 34 inches. They both were sold to me as challenger columns.......

Which one to use?

Thanks!

Would the shorter column be for  power steering, the longer for manual steering?
Is the difference in length just in the shaft that attaches to the steering box?
I don't know the lengths but if both are true E-body columns that would explain the difference.

It seems like I need to install the longer one. I went to my car, it not stored at home, and found out there's about 12 inches from the steering box coupler to the fire-wall.. must be clear now....

Another question: What about the shift-gear-tube: Do I just leave it as it is, when I install the B&M floorshifter?
It doesn't bother me, I might want to cut the lever off....

I don't know why you would need to unless it was for header clearance.

I was thinking of clearance, yes. And of the looks of it....

Seems that I'm all set, now. Thanks for thinking with me, Bullit.
