Underhood modern fuse box on classic mopar?
« on: July 04, 2011 - 01:37:58 AM »
I am throwing around the idea of making multiple relay harnesses for both my 1970 roadrunner as well as my 1972 Challenger, I know as a general rule when running relay harnesses for things such as headlights or fuel pumps it is recommended to run a fuse between the battery and the relay on a 12v circuit. In order to get a cleaner look I debated on purchasing an aftermarket fuse block or even an modern OEM fuse block to wire each connection through. Could a buy a factory underhood fusebox mount it my car have all fuses wired to a constant 12v from the battery and then make each fuse outlet be the fused 12v link to each of my Relay Harnesses? I plan on having many add on accessories such as H4 headlights possible HID, electric fuel pumps, electric fans, aftermarket gauges and ignition among a few other things. Just looking to see if my idea would be possible before i start rounding up supplies for my project. Thanks in advance everyone

I bought a Summit 18 circuit harness with the blade fuses for my 72 Cuda. It has a curcuit for the fuel pump, fan and has each wire marked to where it goes. I will still use relays for lights and alternator and regulator. New wires are better than 39 year old ones that have been cut into. No chance of any shorts that way.

look on ebay at the Dodge relay centers....

I just bought three to do that to my various cars....hell of a lot cheaper than buying pieces to do the same thing...look for free shipping

AutoZone sells a 4 position fuse block that you can install anywhere. I installed one under my hood for my headlight relays, then installed another one in the trunk for my power top and trunk release. if you use 2 together they lock together. You cab also buy relay sockets that lock on to them too.

You can use fuse/relay boxes from mid to late 90's ford ranger/explorer that are found in the engine compartment (Power Distribution Center), some have a good mix of relays and fuses and are relatively small in size. These cars are readily available in most pick and pull wrecking yards. I think I paid 40-50 bucks for the last one I got which has a 11 Maxifuses, 8 ATO fuses along with 3 standard ISO relays and 4 mini ISO relays with a 8 gauge battery cable feed. I like to use these since the wiring diagrams are readily available and they have large current carrying capacity.
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....
